Slack co-founder Stewart Butterfield and Away co-founder Jen Rubio have sold their Aspen, Colorado estate for $30 million, taking a significant haircut from their original $45 million asking price. The couple bought the property in 2021 for $25 million — the same year Salesforce acquired Slack for $27.7 billion — meaning they netted a $5 million gain despite slashing nearly $15 million off their initial list price.
The 10,600-square-foot, six-bedroom home sits on roughly 5 acres in Aspen's Five Trees neighborhood, with sweeping views over Castle Creek Valley. Built in 2013, the property includes a home theater, gym, bar and billiards room, and a wine cellar with tasting room. It was listed in June 2025 at $45 million, later reduced to $39.5 million, and went under contract on August 14 — just one week after the couple publicly announced their separation on Instagram with a statement expressing mutual love and optimism.
Despite the timing, a spokesperson insisted the Aspen sale has nothing to do with the split, and that Butterfield and Rubio have no plans to offload any additional properties. Their remaining portfolio is substantial: it has previously included a New Mexico ranch, a skybridge-equipped architectural landmark in New York, a record-setting New York townhouse, and a historic gabled brick home in the Hamptons. They already shed their San Francisco Victorian mansion in October 2022 for $19.155 million.
Butterfield departed Slack entirely in 2023, two years after staying on as CEO post-acquisition. Rubio continues to lead Away, the luggage brand she co-founded in 2015, as executive chair. Steven Shane of Compass represented the sellers; Kendall Greiner of Douglas Elliman represented the undisclosed buyer.
