Peter Thiel Fears Democratic Socialist Takeover More Than GOP Losing in 2028

Peter Thiel, the PayPal cofounder and Republican megadonor, is sounding alarms — not about the GOP's prospects in 2028, but about what he sees as a potentially catastrophic shift inside the Democratic Party. Speaking in an interview with Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner, Thiel said the more important question isn't whether JD Vance or Marco Rubio carries the Republican banner in 2028, but whether Democrats nominate a democratic socialist.

Thiel said he gives roughly a 50% chance to a democratic socialist winning the Democratic nomination in 2028 — an outcome he described as 'the end of America.' His reasoning: if Democrats sweep the 2026 midterms, they'll become overconfident heading into the next presidential cycle, lowering their guard against a hard-left candidate capturing the party's nomination. Prediction markets already widely expect Democrats to retake the House, which would align with typical midterm dynamics against the party in power.

On the GOP side, Thiel still backs his longtime protégé Vance — who worked at Thiel's firm Mithril Capital before entering politics and called Thiel 'possibly the smartest person I'd ever met' in his new memoir. Thiel poured $15 million into a pro-Vance super PAC during the 2022 Ohio Senate primary, a decisive factor alongside Trump's endorsement. But even with that loyalty, Thiel is pessimistic: he believes both Vance and Rubio will face an extremely difficult path to winning in 2028, suggesting the Republican nominee question may be 'the wrong one' to focus on.

Thiel framed the Democratic Party as the true 'establishment party' in America, making a hard-left takeover of its nomination process far more consequential than anything happening inside the GOP. He has largely described himself as libertarian and sat out much of the 2024 election cycle, though he donated $3 million earlier this year to a group opposing California's proposed one-time wealth tax.
