Superhuman Acquires AI Detection Startup GPTZero in Authenticity Push

Productivity giant Superhuman — formerly known as Grammarly — is acquiring GPTZero, the AI detection startup that Princeton senior Edward Tian built in 2023 and which promptly went viral. The deal brings together two companies betting that demand for distinguishing human from AI-generated content will only accelerate as synthetic text floods the internet.

GPTZero has grown into a serious business since its dorm-room origins. The company now counts 19 million registered users and $30 million in annual recurring revenue, and carries a valuation north of $88 million according to PitchBook. Backers include Uncork Capital, Neo, Footwork, and Jack Altman. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Cofounders Tian, now 26, and Alex Cui will join Superhuman to lead a dedicated authenticity team, bringing GPTZero's 30 employees along with them. GPTZero's detection capabilities will be folded into Superhuman Go, an AI assistant that works across websites and apps, while also continuing to operate as a standalone product. Superhuman CEO Shishir Mehrotra framed the deal as people-first, emphasizing the founders as the core asset.

The strategic logic is clear: Superhuman's flagship writing tool Grammarly already pulls in over $700 million in annual revenue, with education accounting for roughly a third of that base — exactly the sector most anxious about AI-generated work. Demand is also climbing in consulting, recruiting, and journalism. Superhuman already offers a Grammarly AI detector and an Authorship product; GPTZero deepens that stack considerably.

This is Superhuman's fourth major acquisition, following Coda, the Superhuman email app (which gave the company its current name), and AI spreadsheet tool Rows. Mehrotra, a Google veteran, is deliberately building a product suite modeled on how Google expanded beyond search, using Superhuman's 40 million daily active users as a distribution engine to accelerate each acquired product's growth.
