Perplexity AI is seeding its new Personal Computer product by gifting Mac Minis to a select group of tech-focused content creators — a savvy influencer play that taps into one of the hottest hardware commodities in the AI boom. The AI startup confirmed it sent the desktop computers to a small number of people interested in getting the most out of its Personal Computer feature inside the Perplexity Mac app.
Perplexity Personal Computer, which began rolling out in April, is an extension of its AI-powered browser agent. It operates across local files, native applications, and the web — but as of now, only runs within Perplexity's Mac app. The company has specifically highlighted the Mac Mini as one of the best ways to experience the tool, noting that on the device, Personal Computer can run 24/7 with persistent access to local files and native apps. Perplexity's chief communications officer Jesse Dwyer says he personally uses his Mac Mini constantly, remotely controlling it from other Apple devices on the go.
Content creators began posting in May, publicly thanking Perplexity for the hardware — a classic unboxing-and-review campaign similar to what Meta executed with its Ray-Ban smart glasses. The gifting strategy is well-timed: demand for the Mac Mini has surged alongside the AI tools wave, with Apple CEO Tim Cook calling out its heightened demand during a March earnings call. Apple has struggled to keep the device stocked in recent weeks.
The Mac Mini's base price also quietly climbed in early May — the $599 entry-level model with 256GB of storage disappeared, replaced by a $799 starting price for 512GB. As AI agents grow more capable and desktop compute becomes a power-user priority, the Mac Mini is rapidly acquiring cult status in tech circles, making Perplexity's gifting campaign both a product push and a bet on an emerging cultural moment.
