Jeff Dean, Google's legendary employee No. 30 and former chief scientist, has revealed a workout schedule that would exhaust most professional athletes. Speaking at the KDD Conference in Jeju, South Korea, Dean shared a typical weekly routine that includes two soccer games in a 25-and-over league, two gym sessions, two yoga classes, three to four 8-kilometer runs to work, three to four 8-kilometer bike commutes, and at least one longer run or ride on weekends. The disclosure came after a conference attendee spotted yoga on his packed calendar and asked about his fitness habits.
Dean, who spent 27 years at Google and became something of an internal folk hero — the subject of Chuck Norris-style engineering jokes within the company — says his main joint protection strategy is practical and low-tech: cushioned running shoes replaced frequently, plus arch support inserts. His ankles, he noted, remain his weak point after years of basketball sprains.
The fitness reveal is a footnote to a much bigger story: Dean left Google this month to cofound Discovery Loop, an AI startup targeting the automation of scientific and engineering research. The venture is in discussions to raise $1 billion in financing at a valuation of roughly $10 billion — a striking debut for a newly launched company. Alphabet itself is a founding investor, and Google Cloud has signed on as a partner, meaning Dean's ties to his former employer remain very much intact.
Dean's exit is part of a sweeping reorganization at Google's AI division. Demis Hassabis shifted from CEO of Google DeepMind to chair of the unit and chief scientist of Alphabet, while DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu took over day-to-day operations. Dean brought several prominent colleagues with him to Discovery Loop, including longtime Google researchers Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le — a significant brain drain from one of the world's most powerful AI organizations.
