Ad tech company Infillion is acquiring Foursquare, the location data firm that began life in 2009 as a consumer check-in app, in a deal announced exclusively. Rob Emrich, Infillion's founder and executive chairman, confirmed the acquisition, which represents a significant strategic pivot for Infillion — moving it from purely an ad platform into the data sales business.
Under the deal, Foursquare will continue operating as an independent brand inside Infillion and will keep selling its location data to third-party customers, including advertisers running campaigns on competing platforms. That arms-length arrangement suggests Infillion sees Foursquare's value not just as an internal data asset but as a standalone commercial product worth preserving.
Foursquare's check-in app Swarm — still actively used by a loyal niche community — and its newer Superlocal feature have an uncertain future. Infillion says it will evaluate both products, exploring options including open-source models and strategic partnerships. Critically, Foursquare's first-party data from Swarm isn't just a consumer curiosity — it serves as a verification layer for broader location datasets, giving it real commercial utility.
The Foursquare deal is the latest in a string of acquisitions Infillion has used to build out a full-stack advertising platform. Previous buys include demand-side platform MediaMath and loyalty data company Catalina. Emrich describes Infillion as an active acquirer, arguing that advertisers increasingly want integrated platforms capable of delivering measurable business outcomes rather than a collection of disconnected point solutions.
