Chocolate Heiress 'Lulu Lenin' Invokes Aristocratic Duty to Defend Socialist Cred

Grace Ryan, a 25-year-old Ohio chocolate heiress and self-styled socialist activist who goes by 'Lulu Lenin' online, has sparked widespread mockery after defending her wealthy lifestyle by invoking the 19th-century aristocratic concept of noblesse oblige — the idea that privilege carries a duty to help the less fortunate. Ryan posted on X that critics dunking on her for being a progressive from a privileged background had simply never heard of the concept, arguing she has a moral obligation to use her advantages for others. The response was widely ridiculed, including by socialists themselves, who noted that noblesse oblige is fundamentally a bourgeois, aristocratic ideal that directly contradicts the DSA's stated goal of a classless society.

Ryan's background makes the contradiction hard to ignore. Her father, Michael Ryan — a registered Republican — built a $10 million chocolate brand after buying Columbus' historic Maramor Chocolates. Ryan attended the $35,000-a-year Columbus Academy before graduating from NYU, which runs roughly $70,000 annually. She recently posted photos of herself smoking a cigar on a boat while wearing a $400 Ralph Lauren sweater, posing beside a $115,000 Hummer at the family lake house, attending a Montauk beach club, and going to $50-per-class reformer Pilates in Manhattan.

Despite her wealth, Ryan has also complained publicly about the cost of her $3,170-a-month Bushwick studio apartment in what she called the 'Commie Corridor' of East Williamsburg — a unit in a luxury building complete with a gym, squash court, rooftop, doorman, and elevator. The apartment is rent-stabilized through a city program designed to create affordable housing, a detail that drew sharp rebukes from critics who say affluent DSA members are occupying subsidized units meant for lower-income New Yorkers.

Ryan worked as an organizer on Brad Lander's successful Democratic primary campaign for New York's 10th Congressional District between April and July. Analysts at the Manhattan Institute and former city officials have framed the broader phenomenon — wealthy young activists preaching radical redistribution while retaining every personal advantage — as a kind of performative revolution with a financial safety net always in reserve. One former council member quipped that at least old-school communists had to seize the wealth first.
