The festival's organizers made the call just after midnight Saturday morning, citing safety concerns related to stage infrastructure compromised by the gusts. "Due to strong wind conditions affecting Anyma's stage build, he is unable to perform. AccuWeather meteorologist Isaac Longley reported that gusts reached 35 to 40 mph Friday afternoon and evening—precisely when the main stages were hosting major performers, creating "a pretty impactful situation." The Do Lab, a southern stage featuring distinctive colorful fabric shade structures, was shut down entirely and cordoned with yellow caution tape after reports suggested a speaker may have fallen. Neither Goldenvoice (the festival promoter) nor the Do Lab organizers offered comment on the incident.

The forecast offers little relief for attendees hoping calmer conditions will arrive. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration projects Saturday to bring afternoon temperatures of 86 degrees with moderate 5- to 10-mph winds, but conditions will deteriorate after dark. Evening gusts are expected to reach 30 mph, with winds shifting direction and strengthening to 15 to 20 mph overnight. "As we head into Saturday afternoon and evening, we expect pretty similar conditions to [Friday] and for winds to pick up," Longley warned, adding practical advice: "I would definitely consider staking my tent down."

Sunday brings slightly milder temperatures—a high of 79 degrees—but wind remains a persistent threat, with daytime gusts of 10 to 20 mph expected to intensify to 15 mph overnight with gusts up to 30 mph. An air quality alert for windblown dust extends through 5 a.m. Sunday, adding respiratory concerns to the weekend's challenges.

Unusual but Not Unprecedented Challenge

While strong winds are not uncommon in the Coachella Valley—the Empire Polo Club venue sits in a naturally windy region that attracts roughly 125,000 attendees across two festival weekends—performance cancellations due to weather remain rare. The Friday night shutdown underscores how severe conditions must become before organizers prioritize safety over the festival's carefully curated lineup. The incident also raises questions about infrastructure resilience, particularly for temporary stage builds designed for California's typically mild spring weather, and whether additional weatherproofing measures will be implemented for Sunday's performances.
