Musk's xAI Explores Three-Way Partnership with Mistral and Cursor to Challenge OpenAI and Anthropic

Elon Musk is aggressively positioning xAI to compete with AI powerhouses Anthropic and OpenAI through a series of strategic moves, including exploring a potential three-way partnership between xAI, French AI startup Mistral, and coding-focused AI firm Cursor. The collaboration discussions come as SpaceX—which owns xAI—just announced a deal giving it a $60 billion option to acquire Cursor, while Cursor has been training its AI model on xAI's infrastructure. This marks an escalation in Musk's AI ambitions after xAI's own leadership admitted the company is "clearly behind" competitors, particularly in the booming AI coding tools space.

Musk's competitive urgency is palpable. He's been vocally critical of rivals, publicly calling Anthropic's models "misanthropic and evil" and actively suing OpenAI for allegedly abandoning its nonprofit mission. He's also pursuing a strategy of poaching talent: Mistral cofounder Devendra Chaplot joined xAI last month and now leads pretraining efforts. Meanwhile, xAI is rapidly scaling its computational muscle, having already amassed around 200,000 Nvidia GPUs and planning to expand to 1 million—one of the largest data center footprints in the AI race.

The partnership overture to Mistral and Cursor represents Musk's pivot toward ecosystem-building rather than pure solo development. By linking xAI's infrastructure prowess with Mistral's independent positioning as a non-US alternative and Cursor's established AI coding expertise, Musk aims to create a counterforce to Anthropic's recent dominance in AI coding services and AI agents. Anthropic notably blocked xAI from accessing Claude through Cursor in January, adding fuel to the competitive tension. The moves signal that the AI arms race is shifting from individual company competition to alliance-building, with Musk betting that collaboration among three complementary players can move the needle faster than xAI's solo efforts.
