Which iPhones Support Apple Intelligence: Full Compatibility Breakdown

Apple Intelligence — Apple's branded suite of on-device AI features including Writing Tools, Image Playground, Priority Notifications, and the upgraded Siri — is available only on iPhones with an A17 Pro chip or later, meaning it requires relatively recent hardware.

The compatible iPhone lineup starts with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which were the first models to carry the A17 Pro chip when they launched in 2023. All iPhone 16 models — the standard iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max — support Apple Intelligence because every iPhone 16 variant ships with at minimum the A16 chip configured to support it (specifically the A16 Bionic on base models and A18/A18 Pro on the Pro line). The newly introduced iPhone 17 lineup, including the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the budget-oriented iPhone 17e, all support Apple Intelligence as well.

Notably, the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus do NOT support Apple Intelligence despite being recent devices — they use the A16 Bionic but lack the neural engine configuration and RAM (at least 8GB is required) that Apple Intelligence demands. This cut-off has frustrated some users who bought those phones expecting longevity.

Apple Intelligence features also require iOS 18.1 or later and, at launch, were limited to U.S. English, with additional languages and regions rolling out through subsequent software updates into 2025. The EU faced delayed rollout due to regulatory considerations under the Digital Markets Act. Device compatibility is ultimately gated by both chip generation and available RAM, which is why the Pro tier of iPhone 15 qualifies while the base models do not.
