ICE Agent Shoots Venezuelan Man in Austin, Adding to Growing Toll of Immigration Enforcement Violence

An ICE agent shot a Venezuelan man in the torso beneath a highway overpass in Northwest Austin, Texas, on September 20, 2026, in what local officials described as occurring after a brief foot pursuit. The man, whose name has not been released, was hospitalized in serious but stable condition. A bullet-riddled blue Toyota Corolla was found at the scene in a Northwest Austin neighborhood with a significant Latino population that city officials say has seen a surge in recent immigration enforcement activity.

Local officials were furious. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson declared himself 'very angry' but not surprised, citing a pattern of chaos he attributed to ICE's operational style — one that has produced violent incidents in cities across the country. Congressman Greg Casar, who represents the district, pointed to widespread public distrust of ICE's official accounts, noting that federal agencies have previously released inaccurate information following other shooting incidents. Immigration attorney Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, representing the injured man's family, said ICE agents were blocking the family from accessing him at the hospital.

The Austin shooting is the second ICE-related shooting in Texas in recent months and part of a broader pattern of escalating violence tied to the Trump administration's intensified deportation campaign. In July, ICE agents shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston while he was traveling to a construction job — federal officials later admitted he was not the intended target. Days later, 25-year-old Colombian immigrant Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Biddeford, Maine, also while heading to work. Federal authorities have not publicly stated whether he was a target either.

Since Trump took office in January 2025, more than 20 people have been shot by federal immigration agents. Six have died, including three U.S. citizens — among them Ruben Ray Martinez, a 23-year-old American killed by an ICE officer in South Padre Island, Texas, before the Minneapolis crackdown that killed two more civilians in January 2026. Nearly all the shootings have involved agents firing at people in or near vehicles. The Trump administration has since shifted toward more targeted, lower-profile operations, but the shooting incidents have continued.
