Stripe in Talks to Acquire AI Model Marketplace OpenRouter for ~$10 Billion

Stripe, the payments giant valued at $159 billion, is in advanced talks to acquire OpenRouter, a two-year-old startup that operates a marketplace allowing developers to access, compare, and switch between hundreds of AI models. A deal could be announced soon, though negotiations remain fluid and rival bidders could still emerge. The price tag being discussed hovers around $10 billion — a staggering jump from OpenRouter's $1.3 billion valuation just months ago in May 2026, per PitchBook data.

Founded in 2023, OpenRouter has carved out a high-value niche as an intermediary between AI model makers like OpenAI and Anthropic and the businesses that want to deploy them. Its platform lists hundreds of large language models — including proprietary and open-weight alternatives — letting customers easily route between them to optimize cost and performance. That utility has made it extremely attractive as companies increasingly seek to reduce dependence on any single AI provider.

For Stripe, the acquisition would mark a significant push beyond its core payments infrastructure business into AI tooling. The company has already been expanding into AI infrastructure and stablecoin payments, and notably, OpenRouter already uses Stripe as its payment processor — giving the two companies an existing commercial relationship to build on. Multiple other major tech firms had also been circling OpenRouter before Stripe moved to the front of the line.

Separately, Stripe is also pursuing a much larger deal: alongside private-equity firm Advent International, it recently made an unsolicited bid to acquire PayPal at roughly $53 billion. PayPal reportedly viewed that offer as undervalued, and Stripe and Advent are still weighing their next move. The simultaneous pursuit of both deals underscores just how aggressively Stripe is pushing to expand its footprint across the financial and AI infrastructure landscape. OpenRouter's backers include Menlo Ventures and CapitalG, Alphabet's growth-stage venture fund.
