When Hugging Face was acquired, cofounder Thomas Wolf buried a challenge inside his announcement post: a parenthetical inviting readers to find hidden references to both Hugging Face and Nvidia inside the deal's precise price tag of $12,930,300,000. The puzzle set off a decoding frenzy online.

The first hidden reference cracked quickly. The number 129,303 maps directly to the Unicode code point U+1F917 — the official decimal representation of the 🤗 emoji, formally named 'Hugging Face.' Straightforward once spotted, but easy to miss entirely.

The Nvidia reference proved harder. Online sleuths went deep, breaking 129303 into three segments — 12, 93, and 03 — and constructing an elaborate theory: 12 for Nvidia's $12-per-share IPO price when it went public in 1999, 93 for its founding year of 1993, and 03 for its three founders — Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem. It was creative, internally consistent, and almost certainly wrong.

The actual answer was far simpler. Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue responded to a guesser by linking to the Official Register of Color Names, where color code #129303 is listed as a specific shade of vibrant green — the same iconic green associated with Nvidia's brand identity. The Nvidia reference was hiding in plain sight as a hex color code, not a numerical cipher. One commenter's girlfriend, apparently, had already figured it out.

Delangue noted he was surprised the Easter egg hadn't been spotted sooner, adding that the fact the price was engineered around symbolism rather than maximizing the number shows that for both parties, price was secondary to the deal itself. The acquisition had been reported at a valuation of at least $13 billion before closing at $12.9303 billion — a figure that was apparently shaped, at least in part, by emoji and brand colors.
