2026 World Superyacht Awards: Hydrogen Power, Arctic Expeditions, and an $800M Fleet

The 2026 World Superyacht Awards, held in Venice and organized by BOAT International, handed its top Motor Yacht of the Year honor to Breakthrough — a 118.8-meter Feadship behemoth that is both the largest superyacht ever built in the Netherlands and the first to use cryogenic liquid hydrogen fuel cells for propulsion. Reportedly owned by Canadian billionaire Patrick Dovigi and brokered by Edmiston, Breakthrough is believed to represent the most expensive publicly reported superyacht sale ever, at roughly $793 million — though the final figure was never officially confirmed. The yacht features a secret staircase leading to an underwater "Nemo room" with six near-floor-to-ceiling windows, a counterflow pool with a double glass bottom, and separate vertical circulation corridors so owners, guests, and crew never cross paths.

Sailing Yacht of the Year went to Aquarius, a 65-meter Royal Huisman vessel designed by Dykstra Naval Architects with a 67.5-meter main mast, a lifting keel for shallow-water anchoring, and the ability to hit 16 knots in light wind. The interior, by Mark Whiteley, channels a relaxed New England aesthetic with hand-painted walls and satin mahogany. The Voyager's Award went to Dolce, a 43.9-meter explorer yacht that covered more than 40,000 nautical miles on a circumnavigation starting in March 2023, taking her owners from the Seychelles to French Polynesia to gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda.

Other notable winners included Pi — a 122-meter Feadship publicly linked to former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz — which won the 2,500GT–4,999GT displacement motor yacht category. Feadship's 79.5-meter Ice Class yacht Valor, whose design draws on WWII battleships, claimed the 1,500GT–2,499GT category. Larry Ellison's Katana, built by Perini Navi, swept the sailing yacht category for vessels over 40 meters and has now accumulated three major design and innovation prizes in 2026 alone. Meanwhile, Moonstone — linked to liquor billionaire Richard Sands — won the rebuilt category after receiving a 7.2-meter transom extension and a new wellness center.

The awards reflect a broader industry shift: expedition and explorer yachts are booming, with 101 vessels above 24 meters currently under construction or on order according to BOAT International's Global Order Book. Two Cantiere delle Marche builds — the 30.8-meter Haze2 and the 46.71-meter RJ — were among this year's honorees. The jury, composed exclusively of current and former superyacht owners, emphasized that the new generation of buyers is less focused on status signaling and more focused on using yachts as platforms for extreme experiences, from South Pacific exploration to Arctic picnics on icebergs.

For context on scale, the world's priciest reported yachts include Dilbar (156 meters, $800M, Lürssen), Roman Abramovich's Eclipse (162.5 meters, $700M, with anti-paparazzi lasers and missile detection), and Azzam (180 meters, $605M), the world's longest private pleasure yacht. Jeff Bezos's three-masted Koru, at 127 meters and $500M, remains the largest sailing yacht on earth. The 2026 award winners may not top those price tags, but they are redefining what the category's most prestigious trophies are actually for.
