RedBird Capital Eyes $250M Valuation in Puck Investment Deal

Puck, the subscription newsletter startup founded in 2021, is in advanced talks to accept a major investment from RedBird Capital Partners that would value the company at roughly $250 million. The all-cash deal would install RedBird as Puck's leading investor, buying out existing institutional backers including TPG's growth arm, Standard Investments, and J. Rothschild Capital Management — who together provided about $20 million in prior funding. Critically, shares held by Puck's founders and journalists would not be part of the transaction, preserving the equity stakes that are central to the company's editorial model.

Puck was co-founded by former New York Times and Vanity Fair journalist Jon Kelly alongside a cohort of veteran reporters, and it operates on a distinctive journalist-equity model: writers receive ownership stakes and a cut of the subscription revenue they personally generate. That structure — designed to align individual writer incentives with company growth — is the engine behind Puck's approximately 50,000 paying subscribers across newsletters covering Hollywood, media, finance, politics, and fashion.

RedBird isn't new to Puck's cap table. The firm became an investor through Puck's acquisition of Air Mail last year, a cash-and-stock deal valued at $16 million that brought the digital magazine founded by former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter into Puck's portfolio. Now RedBird is looking to deepen that bet substantially. The firm has an aggressive media and entertainment footprint that includes Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's Artists Equity, sports streaming distributor EverPass Media, and a principal financing role in the Paramount Skydance acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.

The $250 million valuation is a striking number for a subscription newsletter company with 50,000 paying subscribers — implying a per-subscriber value of $5,000, which underscores how much of Puck's worth is tied to its premium brand positioning, high-profile journalist talent, and the direct audience relationships those writers have cultivated. Puck's leadership has signaled that journalistic independence and its writer-centric model will remain unchanged under the new structure.
