Salesforce is acquiring Fin — the AI customer service platform formerly known as Intercom — for approximately $3.6 billion in a deal expected to close in Q4 of Salesforce's fiscal year 2027. The acquisition is designed to bolster Salesforce's Agentforce platform with additional agentic AI capabilities, as the CRM giant scrambles to stay relevant in a rapidly shifting software landscape.
Fin's core product is an AI agent capable of handling customer queries across chat, email, WhatsApp, SMS, phone, and Slack — all powered by its proprietary AI model called Apex. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff framed the deal as an acceleration of trusted, measurable AI deployment for businesses of all sizes. Fin CEO Eoghan McCabe, who founded the company as Intercom in 2011 alongside Des Traynor, Ciaran Lee, and David Barrett, said Salesforce's resources will allow the team to push even faster on Apex and its internal agent product, Operator.
The deal comes at a turbulent moment for Salesforce. Its shares have lost more than a third of their value in 2026 amid investor anxiety that next-generation AI tools could erode the company's traditional SaaS business model. Despite topping Wall Street estimates in its most recent earnings report, Salesforce's backlog disappointed analysts. Benioff has pushed back hard on disruption fears, pointing to record-level large transactions in Q1 and strong Slack growth driven by AI adoption.
Intercom's browser chat widget — the little icon lodged in the bottom-right corner of countless websites — became so ubiquitous that it spawned an entire category of copycat products. The company rebranded to Fin just last month, though Intercom's customer-facing software is expected to continue under that name. McCabe's return to the company is itself a story: he stepped back as CEO in 2020 following a controversy over conduct allegations, before being asked by board members to return in 2022. This acquisition marks the latest chapter in his effort to see the company through to its original vision. Salesforce's largest prior acquisition remains its $27 billion purchase of Slack, which closed in 2021.
