Google's Biggest Search Overhaul in 25 Years: AI Mode Comes to the Default Box

Google is rolling out what it calls the most significant upgrade to its flagship search box since the product launched over 25 years ago. The update, announced Tuesday and going live globally the same day, folds AI capabilities previously locked behind the separate 'AI Mode' into the standard search experience — meaning every user hits AI-powered tools by default, without having to choose a mode.

The revamped search box now expands to accommodate longer, more conversational queries and supports file, image, video, and Chrome tab uploads so users can ask contextual questions about their own content. It also delivers AI-powered suggestions as users type, which Google positions as far more intelligent than traditional autocomplete. Critically, users can now ask follow-up questions directly from within an AI Overview — the AI-written summaries that already appear atop search results — with the conversation seamlessly transitioning into the fuller AI Mode experience. Google's VP of Search, Liz Reid, framed the friction between these modes as a real barrier: many users simply didn't want to consciously decide between a traditional results page and an AI-forward one, so Google is eliminating that choice.

Perhaps the most consequential announcement for the broader web ecosystem is the coming rollout of 'information agents' — autonomous background processes that continuously monitor websites, social media, and shopping platforms on a user's behalf. The example Google offered: set an agent to watch for a specific pair of shoes in your size, and it will devise a plan, identify the tools it needs, and alert you when it finds them in stock. These agents are expected to launch in summer 2025.

The agent feature adds fresh anxiety to an already-stressed publisher and brand landscape. Websites have been contending with reduced organic traffic as AI Overviews answer questions without requiring clicks. Background agents that silently harvest information from across the web — without users ever visiting those pages — could deepen that trend substantially, raising new questions about discovery, traffic, and monetization for anyone who depends on Google sending visitors their way.
